One in four tonnes of new steel is made just to replace rust. That's roughly 500 million tonnes a year, and a carbon footprint most of us never think about.

‍

New research presented at IABSE 2026 shows that galvanizing can cut the carbon cost of replacement steel by up to 99%. And unlike hydrogen or carbon capture, it's available today.

‍

It also pays off: in one 30-year comparison, a galvanized structure cost $110,000 with no maintenance, while a painted one cost $597,500.

Martin Gagné – BIO

‍

Martin Gagné is a graduate of the University of Toronto B.A.Sc. and McMaster University M. Eng and has over 30 years of experience in the metals industry in both the steel and non-ferrous metal sectors.

‍

Martin has worked primarily in Research and Development, notably on the structure, property relationships of micro-alloyed steels and more significantly on process fundamentals and product improvements for continuous and after-fabrication hot-dip galvanizing, and in sales and marketing, principally of value-added zinc products.

‍

He is an award-winning public speaker, has over 90 published papers and one patent. He is currently the Principal of Zelixir Inc, a technology and market development company.
